3 Tracing Methods for Any Situation The TW-82 Line Tracer can be used to trace utilities in three ways: conductive, inductive, and coupling clamp method. In the conductive method, the transmitter is used to energize the buried utility by attaching it to the conductive tracing cables. This method usually sets up the strongest magnetic field for the receiver to detect above ground.
In cases where direct physical connection to the utility is not possible, the inductive method is used wherein the utility is indirectly energized by magnetically coupling an energizing current using the transmitter. This method requires some prior knowledge of the utility’s location.
The last method, Coupling Clamp, is used when a utility is exposed but doesn’t have a direct connection for the conductive tracing cables. You can clamp the accessory coupling clamp (sold separately) around the exposed utility and use the transmitter to magnetically couple an energizing current into the utility.
