This pocket-sized tool consists of two replaceable laboratory-type, liquid-filled, non-mercury thermometers with stainless-steel bodies mounted on a flanged back. It also has a swivel handle and a chain.
One of the thermometers is a dry bulb that measures the temperature by being exposed to the air, and the other is a wet-bulb thermometer with a wick over its bulb. To take measurements, the wick is first dipped into the water. The instrument is then whirled around using the swivel handle. During whirling, the water from the wick evaporates, cooling the wet-bulb thermometer in the process. The temperatures of the two thermometers are then read and the relative humidity can be computed using psychrometric tables or charts. Readings are 30°F to 110°F in 1° divisions.
