This is a solid brass reproduction of a Dumpy Level, also known as an Engineer's Transit.
This model stands 5 1/8 inches (13 cm) tall, is 3 1/4 inches (8.25 cm) wide, and weighs 2 pounds 2.7 ounces (.98 kg).
The Dumpy Level has a 20-power inverting telescope with precision crosshairs and two focusing adjustments.
The telescope measures 5 5/8 inches (14.3 cm) long and has a removable brass lens cap to protect the 27 mm diameter objective lens.
On the top of the telescope, there is an adjustable spirit level with a protective cover. The underside of the cover has a mirror to aid in reading the spirit level.
The base has three leveling adjustments and is threaded for a surveyor's tripod mount. The azimuth angle can be precisely adjusted using a fine tuning control. There is an internal magnetic compass with an inverted compass rose, which can be read properly through a prism. A knurled thumbscrew can be set to freeze the orientation of the compass rose.
This Dumpy Level is fully functional, but is not certified accurate for surveying.The quality and craftsmanship on this instrument is very impressive.
A beautiful brass-inlaid hardwood box is included with purchase for storing or displaying the Dumpy Level.The box measures 8 1/4 inches (21 cm) by 4 3/4 inches (12 cm) and is 6 3/8 inches (16 cm) tall.
