How To Choose The Right Laser For The Job

How To Choose The Right Laser For The Job

Which Construction Laser for The Job?

Rotary Lasers – Rotary Lasers project a 360 degree line around a work area or construction site. They are typically mounted on a tripod and used with a laser receiver because the human eye can not see a laser in daylight.

Rotary laser are mostly used for outdoor applications.

Job Applications: foundations, layouts, grade work, pouring concrete, fence installations, drop ceilings, and masonry jobs.

Line Laser Levels – Line Lasers are used to project a solid horizontal and vertical line onto a surface such as a wall, floor, or ceiling.

These are typically used for indoor applications.

Job Applications: cabinetry, tile, drop ceiling, framing, electrical work, and general contractor work.

Plumb Lasers – Plumb or Dot lasers are used to project a single reference point onto a surface such as wall, floor, ceiling.

These are typically used for indoor applications.

Job Applications: plumbing, HVAC, framing, electrical work.

Other specialty construction lasers include grade lasers, pipe lasers and distance meter lasers.

What to look for in ANY Construction laser:

Regardless of which laser you need, these will be the main factors influencing your purchase.

  • Self Leveling or Manual
  • Green or Red Beam
  • Range
  • Battery life
  • IP Rating
  • Warranty

What to look for in a Construction Rotary laser:

Do you need the ability to grade? If yes, you will than need to consider a rotary laser that has sloping capabilities. There are two options for setting slope: manual and automatic. Rotary lasers with manual slope have the ability to adjust slope, but do not give users the exact percentage. With automatic slope lasers, AKA grade lasers, users can simply punch in the desired grade percentage and the laser will automatically set to that position. If you do grading only a few times a year, a manual slope laser will do just fine, but if you are grading daily, we highly recommend purchasing a grade laser.

Tiger Construction Laser Tip:

Plumb lasers are now a feature included in many rotary and line lasers. It may be worth spending the extra money on a rotary or line laser with the plumb feature as they offer much more versatility on a job site.
