    If you’re looking to get the maximum value for your money, the Topcon RL-H5A Horizontal Self-Leveling Rotary Laser is your “top” choice. While it is relatively low in price, the Topcon RL-H5A is a powerful tool that works up to 2,600 feet in diameter when used with a receiver with an accuracy of 1/16" at 100 feet. It normally self-levels within 5 degrees, but you can set it to manual leveling mode when working in job sites with a lot of vibrations. The Topcon RL-H5A can also match a slope of ±5 degrees. Designed for tough job sites, the Topcon RL-H5A has an IP66 rating for resistance to dust and low-pressure water jets. It can run for up to 100 hours on dry cell batteries and 60 hours on a rechargeable battery, making it the perfect companion for a long day in the field.

    Applications of Rotary Laser Levels

    Rotary Laser Levels are used in almost all construction projects both indoor and outdoor. It can be used indoors when installing a series of paintings, kitchen cabinets, drop ceilings, and anything that needs to be level. Outdoors, Rotary Lasers can be used to build a deck or install a fence. In construction projects, it is used in laying out foundations, excavating, site grading, or pouring concrete. 

    How Do Self-Leveling Rotary Laser Levels Work?

    Self-Leveling Rotary Lasers emit a laser point that rotates at extremely fast speeds, giving the image of a straight laser line that spans 360 degrees. Depending on the model, the laser beam will rotate horizontally or vertically. Inside the rotary laser are a self-leveling pendulum and a magnet that work together to ensure that the unit stays level despite minor disturbances or being placed on an unlevel surface. 

    How to Use a Rotary Laser Level

    Rotary Laser Levels are very easy to use. Mount it on a tripod or any stable surface, make sure it’s secure, and turn it on. It will take a few seconds to level itself, and once it’s set, it will emit a rotating laser. This instantly gives you a straight line, almost like a visual chalk line. When the laser instrument gets disturbed and tilts beyond its self-leveling range, it stops emitting the laser and alerts the operator of the disturbance. This ensures accuracy at all times.

    When used outdoors in broad daylight, red laser beams are almost invisible to the human eye. This is where laser receivers come in. Laser receivers are compact devices mounted on a grade rod and are used to detect the laser beam. Some rotary lasers also come with a remote control that lets you control the unit from afar so you won’t have to walk back and forth across the field. Although Self-Leveling Rotary Lasers are rugged, they should be handled with care during transport and storage to avoid damaging the internal self-leveling pendulum.

    Features of Self-Leveling Lasers

    If you’re in the market for a new Rotary Laser, the endless options available can be confusing. But we’re here to help. Let’s talk about the most important features you need to consider when buying a Self-Leveling Rotary Laser. 

    1. Beam Color - Rotary Laser Levels can emit either a green or red beam laser. Choose a green beam laser for the clearest indoor visibility or a red beam for a more affordable option. Both laser types need a laser detector when used outdoors.

    2. Range - A rotary laser’s operating range pertains to how far the laser beam can reach. The operating range you’ll need will depend on the size of the projects you usually do or aim to do. Some Rotary Lasers like the Bosch REVOLVE4000 Rotary Laser are capable of working as far as 4000 feet. 

    3. Accuracy - The accuracy of rotary laser levels typically ranges from 1/8" to 1/16" at 100 feet and decreases with distance. Be sure you know the accuracy you need for the job.

    4. Horizontal or Vertical Leveling - For jobs like installing a drywall track or any vertical structure, you need a Rotary Laser that can be tilted and can shoot the laser beam upwards. Not all models can do this, so be sure to verify if the unit can do vertical leveling.     5. Remote Control - If you work in large job sites, a Rotary Laser Level that can be remotely controlled will save you from walking back and forth across the site. Many of our Rotary Lasers can be remotely controlled, including Bosch REVOLVE900, Spectra Precision HV302G, and Leica Rugby 640G Rotary Laser Level. 

    6. IP Rating - The IP Rating of an instrument refers to its ability to withstand harsh environmental conditions. All of our Rotary Lasers are at least IP54-rated which means they are protected against dust and water sprays from all directions. If you’re looking for something more rugged, we have the IP68-rated Leica Rugby CLA Active Rotary Laser Level which has the highest level of resistance against dust and can survive water submersion for over 30 minutes.
